Whatever the motivations for this form of cosmetic surgery, it’s helpful to know what the healing process is like.

What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty procedures and ear correction surgery are designed to transform the appearance of the ears. This is often referred to as ear pinning and is a popular form of cosmetic surgery.

Trust your cosmetic surgeon

It may sound obvious, but one of the most important parts of recovering from surgery is trusting the advice of your surgeon. Follow the medical advice you are given with regards to looking after scars and helping them heal.

Wear a compression garment

In the first 24-hours after surgery, you will be required to wear a mild compression garment around your head. This is to ensure swelling is kept to a minimum. How long you have to wear this is determined by your surgeon and you’ll be given full advice on this both before and after your ear correction surgery.

Avoid touching your ears

If possible you should avoid touching your ears in the early stages of recovery. You want to make sure that you avoid any signs of infection if you hope to recover smoothly and quickly. You will also be advised to avoid washing your hair in the first week after surgery, to avoid aggravating the incision points.

Keep your head elevated

For the first couple of weeks post-procedure, it is a good idea to sleep with your head in an elevated position. This helps the swelling to reduce. Swelling usually lasts a few weeks and, in some cases, it can last up to six.

Return to work when you’re ready

For some patients, heading back to work after undergoing ear correction surgery may be sooner than others. While some patients feel confident to return to work within a week others do not, and this is usually dependent on the swelling or what your job actually involves. It’s important to feel comfortable before returning to work, so make sure before surgery you have factored this into your recovery plan.
