4 Things To Know About Having A Bum Lift Procedure

Added on 4th June 2021 in Blog

A bum lift is a simple procedure that improves the appearance of a sagging buttock area, which can be paired with other procedures depending on the expectations of the patient. Being informed before any surgery is essential, so we have put together four of the things you should know about having a bum lift procedure.

From the purpose and procedure to recovery and risks, find out everything you need to know about having a bum lift procedure so you can make a decision about whether this is the right option for you!

The Purpose of A Bum Lift Procedure

The primary purpose of a bum lift procedure is to improve the appearance of the buttock area if there has been sagging, often performed in conjunction with a lower body lift or thigh and groin contouring. Patients may opt for this procedure if they lose elasticity in the buttock area, due to aging or weight loss.

How The Bum Lift Procedure Is Performed

The bum lift procedure will be performed under general anaesthetic, meaning you will be fully unconscious. If a patient smokes, they will have to stop 6 weeks before the procedure.

A bum lift procedure is also known as a buttock augmentation, which usually involves the combination of liposuction, enhancement through the use of implants and contouring to remove excess skin or fat. The specifics of the procedure are dependent on the expectations of each individual patient, which will be discussed during a consultation.

This bum lift procedure is different to a Brazilian bum lift (BBL), which is a procedure involving increasing the size of the buttocks by taking excess fat from the hips, thighs or lower back and injecting it into the buttocks. A BBL results in more volume and an improved shape, however, due to the mortality rate of 1 in 3,000, only very specific patients are selected to have this. As a result of this, a normal bum lift procedure is the best option for many patients.

Bum Lift Procedure Recovery Can Take Up To Six Weeks

After the procedure, you will need 4-6 weeks to recover, allowing up to 8 weeks for the scar to heal fully. Patients will need to take at least 2 weeks off work and potentially more depending on the nature of their role.

Light exercise may be allowed after 1 week, with normal exercise being permitted at the 4 to 8 week mark. Exact dates will depend heavily on the exact procedure of each patient.

The Risks of A Bum Lift Procedure

As with any surgery, there are risks you should be aware of. Although this is a low risk surgery, bruising and numbness are to be expected. Rarer risks include infection, long spells of numbness, skin loss or thick scarring.

The requirement for general anaesthetic can also result in cardiac or respiratory issues in rare cases, as well as deep vein thrombosis. These risks will be discussed in more detail with a surgeon.
