Should I Have My Implants For Breast Augmentation Over or Under The Muscle?
Added on 5th October 2020
Breast implants in breast augmentation surgery
Traditionally, the placement of the pocket in which a breast implant is placed in breast augmentation is over or under the muscle. Technically, the muscle underneath doesn’t really exist as it doesn’t stretch all the way down to the chest. In breast augmentation, only the top part of the implant will be covered by the muscle.
Different types of breast implant placements
There are different types of pocket placement options when placing implants in breast augmentation over or under the muscle. These include:
Dual Plane
This is a form of hybrid pocket placement option for patients. This includes some of the breast implant being covered by muscle, whilst the rest of the implant is covered under the skin and with breast tissue.
Subfascial
This is another form of pocket placement which is a layer just immediately above the muscle and there is a fine line of the muscle called the fascia which sits on the original muscle. By raising the tissue and creating a pocket between this and the fascia, the breasts can sit on top of the fascia and the skin. Underneath the implant will sit the muscle and the chest wall.
