Areola Correction

Inverted nipples is a condition that most patients will have had since birth. At UK Aesthetic, we offer areola correction and inverted nipple surgery for both men and women.

What Is An Inverted Nipple?

Inverted nipples are not raised above the surface of the areola, so appear sunken or indented. Similarly, patients may also suffer from an inverted areola. In some cases, the nipples only invert sometimes and can reverse after changes in temperate or stimulation.

This condition is not uncommon, it is believed around 10-20% of people are born with inverted nipples. However, many patients may still feel self-conscious about their appearance.

There are three grades of nipple inversion used to determine the severity of the problem and the best course of action. They are as follows:

Grade 1 – This is the lowest level of nipple inversion, where the nipple may appear flat but not fully inverted. Those with grade 1 nipple inversion may find that the nipple can evert as a result of temperature changes.

Grade 2 – The nipple is slightly more inverted, but can usually be pulled out when the breast is gently squeezed either side. They will likely revert once the pressure is taken away again.

Grade 3 – This is the most severe nipple inversion where they cannot be everted, even when pulled out manually.

The Best Areola Correction Option

Nipple Correction

Nipple correction through breast augmentation is considered the best treatment for areola correction. This involves making an incision to draw the nipple out so it protrudes the way the patient desires. One of the only downsides to nipple correction is that the nipple may fall back and flatten after a few years. For women having inverted nipple correction following reconstruction, an areola tattoo is often placed over the scars for a more aesthetically pleasing result.
