What is capsular contracture?
Capsular contracture is best described as a condition of a capsule that starts to scar and contract. This is relevant within cosmetic surgery for breast augmentation surgery where implants are inserted below the skin to increase or decrease the size of the breast.
When a foreign body is placed within the body, one has a formation of scar tissue which is generally protective of its qualities. However, scar tissue will start to contract and change as it begins to surround the breast implant that’s been inserted. This means that the breast implant will begin to change shape too.
How will capsular contracture impact my breast implant surgery?
When the scar tissue begins to change and contract, your breast implant will also do the same. This is because the breast implant is not solid, which means it can easily adapt to the skin tissue and fit the area that it’s required to in its shape.
As the shape changes, it’s likely you will begin to see and feel the changes that are occurring. With this may also come varying degrees of pain as capsular contracture can range from mild to severe in its form.
