What is the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty?
What is an open rhinoplasty?
With an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made in the skin at the front of the nose. This then allows for the skin to be lifted where your surgeon will have access to the structures underneath. This includes the cartilage at the front of the nose, the septum which is the cartilage that runs directly down the middle of the nose and the nasal bones.
Effectively, an open rhinoplasty allows for all the structures to be visible.
What is a closed rhinoplasty?
For a closed rhinoplasty, an incision is made inside the nose. This means that the skin isn’t lifted up from all the tissues to visualise all the structures in the nose. It also means that there are no visible scars at the front of the nose.
When would I need an open rhinoplasty?
An open rhinoplasty tends to be an option when an adjustment needs to be made to the tip of the nose, or when a patient has had rhinoplasty surgery before and it’s difficult to identify where the changes have been made during the surgery.
When would a closed rhinoplasty be required?
A closed rhinoplasty tends to be useful when patients wish to address the dorsum of the nose, the bridge of the nose or the upper part of the nose. There is also the option to make changes to the tip of the nose but there is a limit to what could be achieved.
