What Is A Mini Tummy Tuck?
Added on 10th July 2020
In this vlog, we’ll be going into more detail about ‘what is a mini tummy tuck’ and what to expect if you were to choose the surgery.
Traditionally, a mini tummy tuck involves the removal of skin in the lower part of the abdomen. The operation occurs just above your pubic region. Comparing it with a full tummy tuck or a fleur de lis abdominoplasty, the amount of excess skin that is removed is far less.
Who would opt for a mini tummy tuck procedure?
Patients who request to have a mini tummy tuck are often those that have a small amount of excess skin around the lower abdomen region.
A good indication of whether you would be suitable for a mini tummy tuck surgery is if you’re unable to pinch enough excess skin above the pubic hair when standing. Because of this, patients opt not to have a vertical scar when removing the excess skin and are satisfied with simply having the lower part removed instead.
It’s common for mini tummy tuck patients to have had some form of lower abdominal scar from a previous cesarean or a hysterectomy. This is because as a result of the surgery, the tethering of the scar or the overhanging skin tends to trouble them the most. A mini-tummy tuck surgery helps to resolve the issue they might have.
The procedure also allows for any repairs to be made to the abdominal wall and also raise the skin to address any bulges in the abdominal wall if you have these.
What is a mini-tummy tuck: Case study 1
In the first case study outlined in the video, you can see the patient has very minimal excess skin above the pubic region. The patient was unhappy with the visible excess skin and the fact that she could pinch this away from her stomach.
Post-operatively, you can see the long term result of her mini-tummy tuck procedure. The scar is much smaller compared to a traditional abdominoplasty procedure, although it is still relatively long. Over time, we’d expect that the scar would fade in colour from red to pink, to white.
Case study 2
You can see similar impacts in the second case study, where excess skin is initially visible pre-operatively. Over time, the excess skin has been removed above the pubic region and the overall contour of the body of the abdomen has improved.
