Will There be Any Changes to my Breast Shape After Reduction?
Added on 25th October 2019
What are the changes to my breast shape after reduction impacted by?
Changes in breast shape after reduction should be expected and the results that you can gain from breast reduction will differ depending on your own anatomy as well as how much you wish to reduce your breasts by. Each patient is different which means results can vary per patient.
What changes should I expect?
At the early stages of your recovery shortly after the breast reduction surgery has been performed, you should expect the breasts to appear higher up the chest wall than what you had at first.
You should also expect scarring underneath the breast fold as the purpose of this is to keep the breasts high up on the chest wall. Tethering of the scar underneath the fold and in the vertical limb can cause some distortion to the breasts in the first few weeks and months after breast reduction surgery has been performed.
Changes in breast shape after reduction – Case Study after 6 weeks
A case study is provided in the video to show the results of one patient that opted for breast reduction surgery. Preoperatively, we can see that her breasts a large in volume, drooping low and nipples appearing low on the breast itself. The post-op images have been taken after 6 weeks and show the changes in breast shape after reduction.
You can see that they appear rather square rather than having a natural curve. This is due to the tethering of the vertical and horizontal scars. It’s important for patients to massage the scars around the 6 weeks mark to lengthen them and allow the breast to drop into the lower portion of the scars. This is due to the superior pedicle technique preserving the upper part of the breasts and requiring encouragement for this to drop into the lower portion of the breasts.
Case study after 6 months
We can see the patient’s results have changed in the breast shape after reduction taking place 6 months on. The upper part has dropped into the lower part of the breasts to provide a more aesthetically pleasing result. This shows that the results will differ from the 6 week to 6 month period as scars also continue to mature.
