What Is A Blepharoplasty?

What is blepharoplasty?

A blepharoplasty procedure is a surgery that is performed around the eyes, more specifically the upper and lower eyelids to help improve your appearance. It’s a form of facial rejuvenation that requires removing tissue from the eyelids, but there have been reasons to suggest that it may be more beneficial for patients to increase the amount of tissue in the eyelids to improve appearance.

What types of blepharoplasty procedures can be performed?

There are 2 forms of blepharoplasty procedures that can be performed; upper eyelid and lower eyelid:

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty

This involves removing tissue from the upper eyelids. In some cases, muscle and fat can also be removed or repositioned to provide a better appearance of the eyelids. 

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty

This involves the process of removing tissue from the lower eyelids. It can be quite rare to have the tissue removed from the lower eyelids. If it is required, how it can be accessed is through an incision underneath the lid before an incision is made in the lower lid, also known as the transconjunctival approach. 

In order to perform surgery on either of the eyelids, it requires performing surgery on the orbital septum. This is a layer underneath the orbicularis muscle which sits between the septum and the skin.

Then, underneath the septum there can be fat pads found which rather than removed, they are repositioned in a way to cover hollow spaces that can be seen around the orbit. 

Blepharoplasty is a form of surgery that encompasses all of these different techniques.
