What Is The Recovery Period Following Upper Lid Blepharoplasty?

Added on 20th July 2020

The recovery period following upper lid blepharoplasty can be considered relatively straightforward. In this vlog we’ll go into more detail about how this works and provide you with further guidance to ensure you gain a full recovery.

What is the recovery period following upper lid blepharoplasty?

The surgery itself is conducted under a local anaesthetic which allows numbing of the pain that you may experience during the surgery. Following the surgery, patients will be provided with a simple suture along the scar line that would have been created during surgery. This would be hidden in the crease of the eye.

Sterile strips are placed on the edge of the stitches to ensure that they can remain in place during your recovery. After a week, you should expect these to be removed depending on how your recovery is going.

What can I do to aid my recovery from the surgery?

To help your own recovery period after upper lid blepharoplasty, there are several steps that you can take to aid this. Specifically, for the first 24 hours after surgery you should look to keep yourself upright and keep your head above your heart level.

We strongly advise you to not bend down if it can be helped. Generally, over the first couple of days you’d expect to feel some form of oozing as your eye continues to recover. If you feel as though your eyes have become dry or gritty, it’s important that you apply eye drops if this occurs.

What happens after my stitches are removed?

Once your stitches are removed, you should expect to see and feel some form of swelling. This tends to be apparent just above the scar whilst bruising tends to descend in the cheek area. The amount of bruising that occurs can differ between patients.

By 2 weeks, you should expect the bruising to be completely gone. Previous female patients have often found that they can socialise and apply make-up again about a week after the stitches have been removed.
