Will It Help If I Have Breast Reduction Due To Back Pain?

What is a breast reduction?

A breast reduction is a surgical procedure that involves reducing the size of the breasts by removing the breast tissue, tightening the skin and elevating the position of the nipple to provide a more aesthetically pleasing result.

What factors determine whether it would be beneficial to have a breast reduction due to back pain?

The amount of tissue that can be removed from the breasts can be dependant on a number of factors. In particular, the position of the inframammary fold will play a key role in this. This is because the nipple will need to be placed around this area.

Breast reduction case study

How much tissue is lifted in the breasts will be how low the nipple is underneath the fold. In the case study provided, we can see the patients nipple is significantly lower than the fold. In the surgery, the nipple was elevated and then the skin was tailored to provide a more aesthetically pleasing breast.

The amount of breast tissue that was removed was related to the position of the nipple on the breasts pre-op and how much of the skin could be tightened. 

Did it benefit the patient’s back to have breast reduction surgery?

The patient has mentioned common symptoms of back pain and this would have been largely down to her breast size. The patient confirmed that these symptoms had been reduced and it is clear to see in the pre and post images that there has been a significant amount of tissue that’s been removed to reduce this.

It must be advised however, that there is no guarantee that symptoms of back pain will reduce after breast reduction surgery. Patients commonly wish to have breast reduction surgery as they feel it will help with their back pain and feel the symptoms will be relieved if they do.
