Is Not Wearing a Bra During Quarantine Bad For my Health?

On the 23rd of March, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced restrictions to promote social distancing. It’s no secret that some of you may feel discomfort when wearing a bra, so your first thought after this may have been the welcoming prospect of not wearing a bra during quarantine.

With many of us now working from home and staying indoors to practice social distancing, loungewear is now our common choice of outfit. Wearing a bra during quarantine has probably seemed unnecessary to you. However, whilst the freedom may seem a great pleasure, is not wearing a bra during quarantine impacting our health?

Not wearing a bra during quarantine can causing sagging

One of the main purposes of a bra is to ensure your breasts are well supported throughout the day. It’s what you need for your breasts in order for them to keep a healthy shape and prevent harm to the connective tissue.

When your breasts are left to naturally droop, it can potentially stretch the Cooper’s ligament and cause it to stretch the breast tissue. By not wearing a bra during quarantine, you run the risk of sagging as the tissues begin to stretch without the support.

You also need to consider other factors related to sagging. Ageing can be a common cause of sagging breasts because your skin loses its elasticity. As a result, it becomes easier for the breasts to stretch at a faster rate. This is something that those of an older generation should consider.

Posture problems

Another part of the support structure that bras provide is improving posture. Breasts are naturally heavy and cause you to naturally slouch if they don’t have the required support. By not wearing a bra during quarantine for long periods, it can get you in the bad habit of slouching.

By wearing a bra, it can help to benefit your skeletal muscles and prevent posture problems in the long term future. Whilst it may feel great to keep your bra off, is it worth the impact it can have on your posture?

If you choose to wear a bra, make sure it isn’t ill fitting

Reading through this blog, you may now be questioning your choice to not wear a bra during quarantine. At the same time, choosing to wear a bra that isn’t the right shape or size can be just as harmful to our health as not wearing a bra at all.

A bra should feel comfortable on your chest. So with a bra that doesn’t fit right, it can cause you to have chronic back pain but also put unnecessary pressure on your diaphragm. In doing so, it can cause major breathing and digestive problems.

Other issues can relate to discomfort, causing rashes and pressure from the bra straps, on the back and underneath the fold of the breasts.

If you’re looking for comfort, choose the right bra

Whilst you’re living at home, it wouldn’t seem necessary to constantly wear a bra during quarantine. However, you should think about how this could be detrimental to your health. If comfort is the main reason for not wanting to wear a bra, there are alternatives that put comfort over style.

Whether it’s a wireless, soft cup or a classic everyday bra, every bit of support can be beneficial for your health in the short and long term, even if you don’t feel the need to.
